Job 28:23

God understandeth the way thereof, and he knoweth the place thereof.

Context

Job speaks after losing his children, wealth, and health. His friends insist that suffering proves hidden sin, but Job knows he has not earned this calamity. In Job 28, he compares the search for wisdom to mining for silver and gold. People dig deep into the earth and find treasure, yet wisdom remains hidden from every living creature (Job 28:20-21). Even the birds of the air cannot see it, showing that no part of creation can discover wisdom on its own.

Meaning

This verse declares that God alone understands the way of wisdom and knows its place. The Hebrew words for “way” and “place” point to wisdom’s nature and origin. Humans cannot discover it by effort or intellect. God’s knowledge is complete and exclusive; He is the only one who can reveal it. This is not merely intellectual knowledge but a sovereign, intimate comprehension of wisdom’s essence.

Biblical connections

In the next verse, Job states that God tells man, “the fear of the Lord, that is wisdom; and to depart from evil is understanding” (Job 28:28). This shows that wisdom is not a human achievement but a gift from God. The same truth appears in Proverbs, where the fear of the Lord is called the beginning of knowledge. Wisdom is a divine possession, not a human discovery.

Application

When we face confusion or suffering, we often try to reason our way to answers. This verse humbles us. We cannot find wisdom on our own. Instead, we must ask God, who knows where wisdom lives, to give it to us. He promises to give wisdom generously to those who ask in faith. In our suffering, we can depend on Him rather than on our own understanding.

Reflection

God’s understanding is not distant or cold. He knows the path of wisdom because He is its source. In our uncertainty, we can trust that He sees what we cannot. Our part is to fear Him, turn from evil, and wait on His guidance. True wisdom for navigating trials comes only from Him.
