Job 28:21
Seeing it is hid from the eyes of all living, and kept close from the fowls of the air.
Job 28:21 (KJV)
Context
In this chapter, Job compares the search for wisdom to the difficult work of mining silver, gold, and precious gems. People dig deep into the earth and risk their lives to find treasure, yet wisdom remains far harder to locate. This verse concludes that wisdom is hidden from every living person and even from the birds of the air, which see from high above. The point is that unaided human effort and observation cannot find true wisdom.
Meaning
The phrase “all living” means human beings, not animals or birds. The mention of birds is significant because they have the highest view and the sharpest sight, yet they cannot discover wisdom. This teaches that no amount of human effort, observation, or cleverness can find true wisdom on its own. Even the creatures with the best vantage point fail to see it. Wisdom is hidden from all creation, but known fully by the Creator.
Biblical connections
Job 28:22 adds that Destruction and Death have only heard a report of wisdom, and Job 28:23 declares that God alone understands the way to it and knows its place. The following verses explain why God knows: He sees to the ends of the earth and under the whole heaven, and He gave weight to the wind and measured the waters. Thus, wisdom is a gift from God, not a human discovery. The chapter closes with the great truth that the fear of the Lord is wisdom, and to depart from evil is understanding (Job 28:28).
Application
Because wisdom is hidden from us, we should not rely on our own understanding. Instead, we should approach God with humility, asking Him for guidance. We can trust that He sees everything and knows what we need, even when we cannot make sense of our circumstances. True wisdom comes from a relationship with God, not from intellectual effort alone. Since God alone knows where wisdom dwells, we can come to Him with confidence, knowing He will give us the wisdom we need.
Reflection
This verse invites us to rest in God’s perfect knowledge. When life feels confusing and answers seem out of reach, we can remember that nothing escapes His notice. He is aware of our struggles and desires. We can find peace in knowing that even when we do not understand, God does, and He will guide us faithfully.
