Job 28:19
The topaz of Ethiopia shall not equal it, neither shall it be valued with pure gold.
Job 28:19 (KJV)
Context
Job speaks after long suffering and debate with his friends. In Job 28, he turns from his own pain to reflect on wisdom. He pictures people mining silver, gold, and precious stones from the earth. Yet he insists that wisdom cannot be found by such effort. The topaz of Ethiopia, a gem prized for its beauty, cannot equal wisdom. Pure gold, the standard of great wealth, cannot buy it.
Meaning
The Hebrew word for topaz may also mean emerald, but the point is clear. Ethiopia, or Cush, was known for fine gems. Some think Cush refers to the region near Midian and Arabia, not necessarily modern Ethiopia. Job names the most valuable treasures he knows to show that wisdom is worth more. Wisdom is not a thing to be purchased or traded. It cannot be measured against gold or any jewel. Its value is of a different kind altogether. This verse is part of a larger poem that contrasts human mining with the far greater difficulty of finding wisdom.
Biblical connections
Proverbs 16:16 agrees that getting wisdom is better than gold, and understanding is better than silver. Job later states the source of true wisdom in Job 28:28: the fear of the Lord and departing from evil. These passages together teach that wisdom comes from God, not from human effort or wealth. The whole poem of wisdom in this chapter contrasts human mining with the divine gift of understanding.
Application
We often measure worth by what we can see and own. This verse calls us to measure differently. Seeking wisdom means studying God’s Word, praying, and obeying Him. It means valuing understanding more than money or possessions. When we choose wisdom, we choose what lasts forever. Earthly treasures fade, but wisdom from God endures.
Reflection
What do we treasure most? Do we spend more energy gaining wealth than gaining wisdom? God offers wisdom freely to those who ask. Let us pursue it with the same effort we give to daily work, knowing that it is more precious than any earthly treasure.
