Job 30:22

Thou liftest me up to the wind; thou causest me to ride upon it, and dissolvest my substance.

Job 30:22 (KJV)

Job speaks here in his final lament, describing the suffering that has overwhelmed him. He once enjoyed wealth and honor, but now he endures loss, pain, and confusion. His words are raw and honest, not a calm theological statement. This is part of his complaint about afflictions he believes come from God, and it captures the depth of his despair.

Being lifted up to the wind pictures a person caught by a powerful gust, carried away with no control. Riding upon it deepens that image: Job feels thrown about by forces he cannot resist. The Hebrew word for “dissolvest” suggests melting or pouring out, so his very substance—his strength and identity—is wasting away. Together these phrases express total powerlessness and inner collapse. The imagery of wind and dissolution also reminds us how fragile human life is under God’s sovereign hand.

This lament resembles the psalmists’ cries of distress, where the writer pours out anguish before God. It also points ahead to Christ, who was also lifted up and crushed in suffering, yet through that brought redemption. The connection is cautious, for Job’s focus is his own pain, not a prophecy. This verse does not teach that God arbitrarily destroys people; rather, it honestly portrays human anguish within a sovereign God’s world.

Believers facing overwhelming trials can find here permission to lament honestly. God does not reject raw emotion; He welcomes it. This verse does not promise rescue, but it validates the experience of being shattered while still trusting in God’s sovereignty. Lament is a valid form of prayer, and bringing raw emotions to God is an act of faith.

When life feels like a violent wind, remember that God remains present even in chaos. Lament is a form of faith, not a lack of it. Bring your honest cries to Him, knowing He hears and understands. Even when His ways are incomprehensible, we can trust in His ultimate goodness.
