Job 31:17

Posted on 18 May at 15:19
Listen to this article

“Or have eaten my morsel myself alone, and the fatherless hath not eaten thereof”

Job 31:17 is part of a longer passage known as Job’s final defence. In this chapter, Job presents his case and maintains his innocence against the accusations and judgements of his friends. He declares his commitment to righteousness and lists various sins that he has avoided.

In this particular verse, Job is emphasising his integrity and fairness in sharing his resources with others, specifically the fatherless or orphaned children. By saying, “Or have eaten my morsel myself alone,” Job is proclaiming that he has not selfishly consumed his food without sharing it. He acknowledges that he has not hoarded his resources solely for his own benefit.

Job’s concern for the fatherless reflects a recurring theme in the Bible, where God consistently emphasises the importance of caring for the vulnerable and marginalised in society, including orphans. The biblical mandate to care for orphans is rooted in God’s character and His concern for justice and compassion.

Job’s statement in this verse highlights his commitment to social justice and his understanding of the responsibility to provide for those who are unable to provide for themselves. It reveals his awareness that blessings and resources are meant to be shared generously with others, especially those in need.

This verse serves as a reminder to believers today to cultivate a spirit of generosity, kindness, and social responsibility. It encourages us to consider the less fortunate and extend a helping hand to those who lack basic necessities, just as Job did by sharing his food with the fatherless.

Overall, Job 31:17 challenges us to examine our own actions and attitudes towards sharing our resources with others, particularly those who are vulnerable or in need. It invites us to reflect on how we can live out the values of justice, compassion, and generosity in our daily lives, following the example set by Job and the biblical teachings.
