Job 31:19

“If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering”

Job 31:19 (KJV) states: “If I have seen any perish for want of clothing, or any poor without covering.”

This verse is part of Job’s final defence before his friends as he maintains his innocence and righteousness. In this particular section, Job is presenting a series of oaths and declarations, denying various sins and affirming his commitment to living a righteous life.

In Job 31:19, Job addresses the issue of lacking compassion for those in need, specifically focusing on individuals who are without clothing or proper covering. He declares that if he has ever witnessed someone perish due to lack of clothing or if he has ever seen a poor person without appropriate covering, he would be held accountable.

This verse highlights Job’s concern for the poor and his commitment to act justly and mercifully towards them. Job acknowledges the importance of providing basic necessities to those in need, including clothing and shelter. He recognises the gravity of neglecting such responsibilities and declares his innocence in this matter.

Job’s statement reflects the biblical principle of caring for the vulnerable and less fortunate. Throughout the Bible, God consistently commands His people to have compassion for the poor, widows, orphans, and strangers. Providing clothing and meeting the basic needs of others is seen as a reflection of God’s character and an expression of love and justice.

By emphasising his concern for those without clothing or proper covering, Job demonstrates his commitment to fulfilling his role as a compassionate and just individual. His words serve as a reminder to us today to actively seek opportunities to help those in need and to extend kindness and provision to those lacking basic necessities.
