Context

In the book of Job, a righteous man suffers deeply while his three friends, Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar, try to explain his pain. Their answers fail. In Job 32, a young man named Elihu speaks for the first time. He has listened carefully to the long exchange and now corrects his earlier thought that age alone should speak. He insists that wisdom is not limited to the elderly.

Meaning

Elihu declares that there is a spirit in every person. This spirit is the inner breath of life that God has placed within humanity, giving people the ability to reason and discern. The word “inspiration” can also be translated as “breath” or “spirit.” It means that God Himself breathes understanding into people. Human intellect and learning have value, but they are limited. True insight comes from the Almighty, who imparts knowledge and discernment to those who seek Him.

Biblical connections

This teaching echoes the truth that wisdom is a gift from God. In Job 32:7, Elihu had said that age should speak, but here he corrects that view. He recognizes that the spirit in man, both young and old, can receive understanding from God. Elihu’s speech continues through Job 37 and prepares the way for God’s own answer in Job 38.
