Job 34:23

For he will not lay upon man more than right; that he should enter into judgment with God.

Job 34:23 (KJV)

Elihu speaks these words during the long debate about Job’s suffering. Job’s friends had argued that suffering always comes from personal sin, while Job insisted he was innocent. Elihu offers a different view, focusing on God’s perfect justice and wisdom.

“For he will not lay upon man more than right” means God never gives anyone more punishment than they truly deserve. His judgments are always fair and never excessive. In fact, God always punishes less than our iniquities deserve, showing mercy even in judgment. God knows every person completely, so He does not need to examine anyone further before deciding their case. He already sees all truth and does not need to set a time for a further hearing.

“That he should enter into judgment with God” shows that no human can successfully argue against God’s decisions. God’s wisdom is far above ours, so questioning His justice is both useless and prideful. Elihu warns against acting as if we could sit in judgment over God.

This verse connects with Job 23:6, where Job expresses hope that God would not use His great power to crush him but would listen to him. Together, these verses show that God’s power is always guided by His justice and mercy. God does not oppress people; He deals with them fairly.

When we suffer, we may be tempted to think God is being unfair. This verse reminds us that God’s ways are always right, even when we cannot understand them. Instead of accusing God, we can humbly trust that He sees the whole picture and will act justly.

God’s judgments are also a comfort. He will not allow more to come upon us than is right. He knows our limits and provides strength to endure. We can rest in His fairness rather than fear His power.

Do we ever question God’s justice when life is hard? This verse calls us to lay down our complaints and trust His perfect wisdom. God is both mighty and fair, and He invites us to bring our pain to Him without accusing Him of wrong.
