Job 36:26

“Behold, God is great, and we know him not, neither can the number of his years be searched out.”

Recognizing God’s Greatness: The verse begins with the declaration, “Behold, God is great.” Elihu emphasizes the vastness and magnificence of God’s being. The greatness of God encompasses His power, wisdom, and sovereignty over all creation. It points to the idea that God is beyond human comprehension and exceeds our finite understanding.

Limited Human Knowledge: Elihu acknowledges that despite God’s greatness, humans cannot fully know Him. The verse states, “and we know him not.” It implies that our knowledge and understanding of God are limited. While God has revealed Himself through creation, His Word, and personal experiences, there are aspects of His nature that surpass human understanding.

The Incomprehensibility of God’s Eternal Existence: Elihu further asserts, “neither can the number of his years be searched out.” This statement underscores the eternal nature of God. God exists beyond the confines of time and space. He has no beginning or end, and the full extent of His existence cannot be fathomed by human minds.

Job 36:26 reminds us of our limitations as human beings when it comes to understanding the fullness of God. It emphasises the awe-inspiring greatness of God and His eternal nature. While we can have a relationship with Him and gain knowledge of His character through His self-revelation, there will always be aspects of His being that are beyond our comprehension.

This verse encourages humility and reverence before God. It invites us to recognise that our understanding of Him is limited and to approach Him with a sense of awe and wonder. It reminds us to trust in His wisdom and sovereignty, even when we cannot fully grasp the reasons behind His actions or comprehend the depths of His existence.
