Job 41:12

I will not conceal his parts, nor his power, nor his comely proportion.

Job 41:12 (KJV)

The book of Job is a poetic and philosophical exploration of human suffering and the nature of God’s sovereignty. Job, a righteous man, undergoes tremendous suffering, losing his wealth, family, and health. Throughout the book, Job and his friends engage in dialogue, discussing the reasons for his suffering and the ways of God.

In Job 41, God responds to Job’s questioning from the whirlwind, using vivid descriptions of a creature called Leviathan. Leviathan is portrayed as a powerful and untameable sea creature, emphasising God’s sovereignty over creation and highlighting Job’s limited understanding of divine wisdom. This verse introduces the detailed description of Leviathan that follows, showing that God will not hold back in revealing the creature’s nature.

When God says, “I will not conceal his parts,” He is declaring that He will not hide or withhold any information about Leviathan. The Hebrew context suggests that “parts” refers to the members of the creature’s body, which are like bars of iron. This implies that God is highlighting His authority and knowledge over all creation, including the mysterious and powerful creatures like Leviathan. God is affirming His wisdom and sovereignty.

The phrase “his power” indicates Leviathan’s very great strength, whether understood as a crocodile or a whale. God asserts that He will not hide the strength and might of this creature. This emphasises that God alone possesses the ultimate power and authority over all creation, including formidable beings such as Leviathan. It underscores God’s unlimited power compared to human limitations.

“His comely proportion” refers to the symmetry of the body and its members, which, though large, are in just proportion to each other. Despite its fearsome appearance and power, God acknowledges that even the seemingly terrifying aspects of creation have their own beauty and purpose within the larger scope of God’s design. The verse functions as an introduction to the detailed description of Leviathan that follows in the chapter.

This verse is part of God’s response to Job from the whirlwind, within a larger passage where God demonstrates His sovereignty over creation. The description of Leviathan’s power and proportion serves to humble Job and to teach that God’s ways and wisdom are beyond human comprehension. The broader context includes God’s assertion that everything under heaven belongs to Him, and the preceding chapter’s description of Behemoth, another powerful creature, shows a pattern of God using creation to instruct Job.

  • Trusting God’s wisdom: Just as Job struggled to understand his suffering, we may face circumstances that are difficult to comprehend. Job’s experience reminds us to trust in God’s wisdom, even when we cannot fully grasp His ways.

  • Recognising God’s power: Job 41:12 reminds us of God’s unmatched power. When we feel overwhelmed or face challenges, we can take comfort in knowing that God is in control and that His power is greater than any obstacle we may encounter.

  • Appreciating God’s creation: God’s description of Leviathan encourages us to appreciate the beauty and diversity found in creation. It reminds us to marvel at the intricacies of the natural world and recognise God’s handiwork in all things.

In summary, Job 41:12 affirms God’s sovereignty, highlights human limitations, reveals beauty in God’s design, and calls us to trust in His wisdom and power. It serves as a reminder to humbly submit to God’s understanding, appreciating His creation and His purposes, even in the face of mystery and suffering.
