Joel 2:19
Yea, the Lord will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen:
Joel 2:19 (KJV)
Context
Joel prophesied during a locust plague that devastated Judah, calling the people to repentance. In Joel 2:12-27, the tone shifts from judgment to mercy, as the Lord invites His people to return to Him with fasting and mourning, assuring them of His compassion.
Meaning
In Joel 2:19, the Lord answers the repentance of His people. He is not distant but actively engaged, promising to send corn, wine, and oil. These staples represent sustenance, joy, and prosperity in ancient Israel, demonstrating God’s faithfulness and care.
The people will be satisfied with this provision, experiencing complete sufficiency and contentment in God’s gifts. This reflects His desire to restore them to abundance and well-being.
God also promises to remove their reproach among the nations. The devastation of their land had made them appear abandoned by God, bringing shame and mockery. By restoring their fields, He would vindicate them and restore their honor.
Biblical connections
The three staples—corn, wine, and oil—represent the basic necessities of life and the fullness of God’s provision. The promise that they “shall be satisfied therewith” emphasizes complete sufficiency in God’s gifts. The final clause shows that restoration would remove the disgrace Israel experienced among surrounding nations.
Application
While this passage addresses physical restoration, it also illustrates God’s redemptive nature and His willingness to forgive and restore those who repent. It reveals His heart for His children, His provision, and His desire to bless them abundantly, encouraging believers to trust in His care.
Reflection
God’s promise to answer repentance with provision and honor reminds us that He is faithful to His covenant. His blessings bring glory to His name among the nations, and His restoration is both physical and spiritual.
