Joel 3:12
Let the heathen be wakened, and come vp to the valley of Iehoshaphat: for there will I sit to iudge all the heathen round about. Joel 3:12 (KJV)
The book of Joel is one of the prophetic books of the Old Testament. It delivers a message of warning, repentance, and hope for Israel. The prophet addresses a time of national crisis, possibly a devastating locust plague, which serves as a metaphor for a future judgment of God. In chapter 3 the focus shifts to the future Day of the Lord, when God will execute judgment on the nations.
The term “Valley of Jehoshaphat” occurs in Joel 3:2‑3 (KJV) and also appears elsewhere in Scripture, such as Joshua 18:16 (KJV). The name “Jehoshaphat” means “Yahweh has judged” or “Yahweh judges,” indicating that the valley is a symbolic place associated with divine judgment. It is presented as the location where God will gather the nations for that judgment.
The verse calls the heathen, or the nations, to be awakened. This summons urges the nations to recognize and respond to the impending judgment of God, suggesting they must rise from spiritual slumber, ignorance, and rebellion against Him.
The gathering for judgment is described as the nations coming up to the Valley of Jehoshaphat. While some view this as a literal geographic spot, many understand it symbolically as a time when God will bring all the nations together for a universal and final judgment.
Finally, the passage emphasizes that God Himself will sit to judge all the nations around. This highlights the sovereignty of God as the ultimate Judge of all humanity, portraying a scene in which He takes His rightful place, exercises divine authority, and executes justice upon the nations.
