Consider and heare me, O Lord my God: lighten mine eyes, lest I sleep the sleepe of death. Psalms 13:3 (KJV)

Context: Before examining verse 3, it is helpful to understand the context of the entire psalm. Psalm 13 is a lament written by King David, expressing distress, sorrow, and a sense of abandonment by God. David opens the psalm by asking how long God will forget him and allow his enemies to triumph.

Call for God’s Attention: In verse 3 David pleads with God to “consider and hear” him. This plea reflects his deep desire for God’s attention and intervention. He acknowledges the Lord as his only hope for relief from his suffering and seeks divine response to his cry.

Enlightenment: David asks God to “lighten mine eyes.” In biblical language, “lightening the eyes” signifies the granting of sight, understanding, or spiritual illumination. David longs for wisdom, guidance, and a fresh perspective that will enable him to see beyond his present difficulties and discern God’s way forward.

Sleep the Sleep of Death: The phrase “sleep the sleep of death” is a vivid expression of David’s fear and despair. He is not speaking of literal physical death but of the hopelessness that can lead to spiritual death. Overwhelmed by his circumstances, David is desperate for God’s intervention to restore life to his spirit and revive his hope.

Thus, Psalm 13:3 captures a heartfelt petition for divine attention, enlightenment, and rescue from the brink of spiritual death, inviting believers to bring their own cries of distress before the Lord, trusting that He will hear and illuminate their path.
