John 1:43

Posted on 18 May at 14:38
Listen to this article

“The day following Jesus would go forth into Galilee and findeth Philip and saith unto him, ‘Follow me.’”

Historical Context:John 1:43 takes place shortly after Jesus’ baptism by John the Baptist and the calling of Andrew and another disciple, who is traditionally believed to be John himself. In this verse, Jesus leaves the area where He was baptized and heads into Galilee.

  • Discipleship and Calling:

In this verse, Jesus encounters Philip and calls him to be one of His disciples with the simple command, “Follow me.” This direct invitation signifies Jesus’ authority and the personal nature of His call to discipleship. Jesus often called His disciples by personally inviting them to follow Him, leaving behind their former lives to become His followers and learn from Him.

The Encounter with Philip:Philip is not as prominent in the Gospel narratives as some of the other disciples, but he plays an important role in the ministry of Jesus. He is mentioned in various instances, such as when he brings Nathanael to Jesus in the following verses (John 1:44-45). Philip is also known for his request to Jesus during the feeding of the five thousand, when he questions how they can afford to buy enough bread (John 6:5-7).

The Significance of Galilee:Galilee holds great significance in Jesus’ ministry. It was Jesus’ hometown (Matthew 2:23) and the region where He spent much of His earthly life. By starting His ministry in Galilee, Jesus fulfills the prophecy of Isaiah, who spoke of Galilee as a place of light (Isaiah 9:1-2). Galilee becomes the center of Jesus’ early ministry, where He performs miracles, teaches, and gathers His disciples.

Application:

  • John 1:43 provides an example of Jesus’ personal call to discipleship. It reminds us that Jesus calls individuals to follow Him, inviting them into a relationship of learning, growth, and service. Just as Jesus called Philip, He continues to call people today to be His disciples. Responding to His call requires a willingness to leave behind our old ways of life and follow Him wholeheartedly.

Furthermore, this verse emphasizes the importance of responding to Jesus’ call promptly and decisively. When Jesus calls, Philip immediately follows Him. This challenges us to consider how we respond to Jesus’ call in our own lives. Are we willing to leave behind our own plans and desires to follow Him wholeheartedly, without hesitation or delay?

In conclusion, John 1:43 highlights Jesus’ authority in calling His disciples and the immediate response of Philip to His call. It invites us to reflect on our own response to Jesus’ call to discipleship and challenges us to follow Him faithfully, just as Philip did.
