John 10:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:37
Listen to this article

“And when he putteth forth his own sheep, he goeth before them, and the sheep follow him: for they know his voice.”

Context:The verse is part of a discourse by Jesus where He describes Himself as the Good Shepherd. In this passage, Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd and his sheep to illustrate His relationship with His followers. He contrasts Himself with thieves and robbers who try to enter the sheepfold by other means.

Metaphorical meaning:In the metaphor, Jesus represents the Good Shepherd, and His followers are portrayed as sheep. The shepherd’s role is to lead and guide the sheep, ensuring their well-being and protection. The sheep, in turn, are expected to recognize the shepherd’s voice and follow Him.

The Shepherd’s initiative:The verse highlights the proactive nature of the Good Shepherd. It says that when the shepherd puts forth his own sheep, he goes before them. This implies that Jesus takes the lead in guiding and directing His followers. He doesn’t just send them off on their own; He goes ahead of them, showing the way and providing an example to follow.

The sheep’s response:The sheep, being familiar with the shepherd’s voice, follow him. This emphasizes the importance of recognizing and knowing the voice of the Good Shepherd. Sheep have a natural instinct to respond to the voice of their shepherd, and they trust him to lead them to green pastures and protect them from danger.

Trusting the Good Shepherd:Just as sheep trust their shepherd, we should trust Jesus completely. He knows what is best for us, and His guidance is always for our benefit. Even when we face uncertainties or difficulties, we can rely on His wisdom and love to lead us through.

Discerning the Shepherd’s voice:To recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd, we need to familiarize ourselves with His Word and cultivate a close relationship with Him. The more we know and understand Scripture, the better we can discern His voice amidst the noise of the world and the various influences around us.

Following the example of Jesus:Jesus leads by example, and as His followers, we are called to imitate Him. We can look to His teachings, His character, and His sacrificial love as a guide for our own lives. By following His example, we become more like Him and reflect His light to others.

In conclusion, John 10:4 teaches us about the relationship between Jesus, the Good Shepherd, and His followers, the sheep. It emphasizes the shepherd’s initiative in leading and guiding His flock, and the sheep’s responsibility to recognize and follow His voice. As believers, we are called to know and trust the voice of our Good Shepherd, Jesus, and to follow Him wholeheartedly.
