John 10:3

To him the porter openeth; and the sheep hear his voice: and he calleth his own sheep by name, and leadeth them out.

John 10:3 (KJV)

John 10 is part of the Good Shepherd discourse, where Jesus describes Himself as the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep. In this verse, He uses the metaphor of a shepherd and his sheep to illustrate the relationship between Himself and His followers.

The porter, or gatekeeper, guarded the sheepfold at night, a pen where sheep were kept for safety. His opening to the shepherd showed that the shepherd had legitimate access, unlike thieves and robbers who climbed in by other means (John 10:1). Some readers understand the porter as symbolizing God the Father, who grants access to Jesus, the true Shepherd.

The sheep hear the shepherd’s voice, indicating a close relationship and recognition. Sheep know and respond to their shepherd’s voice, and believers are called to listen attentively to Jesus through the Holy Spirit, His Word, prayer, and discernment.

Jesus calls His own sheep by name, reflecting the eastern shepherd practice of giving names to sheep. This signifies His personal, effectual call to His people, who are His own by the Father’s gift, purchase of His blood, and power of His grace. It shows His intimate knowledge of each person and His individual care.

He leads them out, showing His initiative in guiding and caring for them. The imagery is of the shepherd going ahead of His sheep, leading them to safe and fertile pastures. Jesus, as our Good Shepherd, leads and guides us in our spiritual journey, protecting us from harm and bringing us into abundant life.

This verse sets the stage for Jesus’ later declaration, “I am the good shepherd” (John 10:11), and His statement, “My sheep hear my voice” (John 10:27). It also echoes Old Testament imagery of God as the shepherd of His people, such as in Ezekiel 34:23, where God promises to send a shepherd to care for His flock.

John 10:3 reminds us of the personal relationship we can have with Jesus, the Good Shepherd. Just as a shepherd knows his sheep by name and leads them to safety, Jesus knows each one of us intimately and guides us in our lives. It underscores the importance of actively listening to His voice through His Word and the leading of the Holy Spirit. As His followers, we can find comfort and security in knowing that Jesus cares for us individually and is ever-present to guide and protect.

Consider the wonder that the Shepherd of Israel calls you by name. He does not treat you as one among many, but as His own, known and loved. Take time this week to listen for His voice in Scripture and prayer, and trust that He who calls you will also lead you out into the paths He has prepared for you.
