John 10:1

Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that entereth not by the door into the sheepfold, but climbeth up some other way, the same is a thief and a robber.

John 10:1 (KJV)

Jesus spoke these words shortly after healing a man born blind, an act that stirred controversy among the Pharisees. He uses the familiar image of a shepherd and his sheep to warn against those who would lead His people astray.

The sheepfold was a walled enclosure with a single door, where sheep were kept safely at night. A shepherd would enter through that door, but a thief or robber would climb over the wall. Jesus solemnly begins with “Verily, verily,” a phrase that stresses the importance of what He is about to say. He declares that anyone who does not enter by the door is a thief and a robber. Later in the same chapter, Jesus plainly says, “I am the door of the sheep” (John 10:7), making clear that He Himself is the only legitimate way into the fold.

The Old Testament often speaks of shepherds, both faithful and false. In Ezekiel 34, God condemns the shepherds of Israel who failed to care for the flock, and He promises to come Himself to shepherd His people. Jesus’ words echo this background, presenting Himself as the true Shepherd who enters by the proper way.

This verse calls us to recognize that there is only one way to enter into a right relationship with God: through Jesus Christ. We must be cautious of any teaching or leader that offers an alternative path to salvation or spiritual growth. As His sheep, we are to trust Him, listen to His voice, and follow Him, knowing that He alone provides true safety and abundant life.

Jesus is the door. Have you entered through Him, or are you trying to climb in by another way? Take time to examine your heart and ensure that your faith rests solely on Christ, the Good Shepherd who gave His life for the sheep.
