John 10:7

Listen to this article

“Then said Jesus unto them again, Verily, verily, I say unto you, I am the door of the sheep.”

1. Context: Before we delve into the verse itself, it’s important to understand the context in which it is found. John 10 is part of a discourse by Jesus where He speaks about Himself as the Good Shepherd. In this discourse, Jesus emphasizes His role as the shepherd who cares for His sheep, protects them, and provides for their needs.

2. “Verily, verily”: Jesus begins this statement with the phrase “Verily, verily” (or “Truly, truly” in some translations). This phrase is used by Jesus to emphasize the importance and truthfulness of what He is about to say. It signifies that what follows is of utmost significance and deserves special attention.

3. “I am the door”: In this verse, Jesus declares, “I am the door of the sheep.” Here, Jesus uses a metaphor to describe Himself. In the context of shepherding, a sheepfold is an enclosure where the sheep are kept safe from predators and other dangers. The sheepfold typically has only one entrance, which serves as the door. The shepherd would lie down across the entrance to protect the sheep, becoming the physical barrier between the sheep and any harm that might come to them.

By declaring Himself as the door, Jesus is expressing that He is the exclusive means by which the sheep (His followers) can enter into a place of safety, security, and salvation. He is the only way to access the abundant life that He offers. Through this metaphor, Jesus establishes His role as the shepherd who guards, guides, and provides for His sheep.

4. The significance: Jesus’ statement holds several significant implications:

  • a) Exclusive access: Jesus presents Himself as the only means of entering into a relationship with God and receiving eternal life. He is the doorway through which one must pass to experience salvation and spiritual fulfillment.
  • b) Protection and safety: Just as a physical door provides protection and safety for the sheep, Jesus, as the door, assures His followers of divine protection from spiritual dangers and eternal security. He shields them from harm and leads them to green pastures.
  • c) Personal connection: Jesus’ role as the door highlights the intimate relationship between Him and His followers. The sheep know and recognize the shepherd’s voice, and they trust Him. Likewise, Jesus calls His followers to know Him personally, to hear His voice, and to follow Him faithfully.

5. Application: John 10:7 encourages believers to understand and embrace Jesus’ exclusive role as the door of the sheep. Here are a few practical applications:

  • a) Salvation through Christ: Recognize Jesus as the only way to salvation and eternal life. Trust in Him alone for forgiveness of sins and reconciliation with God.
  • b) Seeking refuge in Him: In times of trouble, uncertainty, or spiritual attack, find refuge and protection in Jesus. Rely on His guidance, wisdom, and strength.
  • c) Developing intimacy: Cultivate a personal relationship with Jesus by spending time in prayer, studying His Word, and seeking to hear and obey His voice. Grow in familiarity with Him so that you can discern His leading in your life.
  • d) Following His example: As the Good Shepherd, Jesus sets an example of sacrificial love, care, and provision. Strive to imitate His character in your interactions with others, particularly in your roles as leaders, parents, or caretakers.

Remember that studying and meditating on God’s Word is a lifelong journey. It is beneficial to explore the verses before and after John 10:
