John 10:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:36
Listen to this article

“All that ever came before me are thieves and robbers: but the sheep did not hear them.”

Context:To understand the meaning of this verse, it’s important to consider its context. In John 10, Jesus uses the metaphor of a shepherd and his sheep to illustrate His relationship with His followers. He speaks of Himself as the Good Shepherd who cares for His sheep and contrasts His role with the actions of others who have come before Him.

Thieves and robbers:In this verse, Jesus refers to those who came before Him as “thieves and robbers.” These individuals represent false messiahs, religious leaders, or anyone who claims authority or tries to lead people astray without genuine concern for their well-being. They seek their own gain and deceive people with their false teachings.

Sheep not hearing them:Jesus declares that His sheep, referring to His true followers, did not listen or respond to these false leaders. The sheep recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd and follow Him faithfully. This statement emphasizes the importance of discernment and recognizing the true teachings of Jesus.

Jesus as the true Shepherd:By describing Himself as the Good Shepherd, Jesus establishes His authority and contrasts it with the false leaders who came before Him. He is the genuine Shepherd who leads His followers into safety, provides for their needs, and gives them eternal life.

Application:This verse encourages believers to be discerning and cautious regarding the teachings and influences they encounter. It reminds us to compare what we hear and learn with the teachings of Jesus as revealed in the Bible. As His sheep, we should strive to know His voice and follow His guidance, remaining steadfast in our faith.
