John 11:36

Listen to this article

“Then said the Jews, Behold how he loved him!”

Context:John 11:36 is found within the story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Lazarus was the brother of Mary and Martha, and they were all close friends of Jesus. Lazarus fell ill, and his sisters sent word to Jesus, hoping that He would come and heal him. However, Jesus deliberately delayed His arrival, allowing Lazarus to die and be buried for four days. When Jesus finally arrived at the tomb, He commanded Lazarus to come forth, and Lazarus was raised back to life.

In this verse, we see the reaction of the Jews who were present at the scene. They witnessed Jesus’ deep love for Lazarus, which was demonstrated through His weeping and the subsequent miracle of raising him from the dead. The Jews acknowledged and marveled at the evident love Jesus had for Lazarus.

Love Demonstrated:This verse highlights Jesus’ love for His friend Lazarus. It shows the depth of Jesus’ compassion and empathy for those who are suffering. It reveals His humanity and His ability to connect with the emotions and struggles of others.

Witness to God’s Love:The Jews witnessing this event were able to see a tangible expression of God’s love through Jesus. It served as a powerful testimony to the divine nature of Jesus and His role as the Son of God. The miraculous resurrection of Lazarus pointed to Jesus’ authority and power over death itself.

Reflection on Jesus’ Love:As readers today, we can reflect on this verse and recognize the incredible love Jesus has for each one of us. Just as He loved Lazarus, He loves us deeply and desires to bring us from spiritual death to life. This verse serves as a reminder of the immeasurable love and grace that Jesus extends to all who believe in Him.

  • Acknowledge His Love:Take a moment to reflect on the love Jesus has shown you through His sacrifice on the cross. Recognize the depth of His love and allow it to impact your understanding of His character.
  • Express Gratitude:Thank Jesus for His love and the salvation He offers. Express gratitude for the ways He has shown His love in your life through His provision, guidance, and blessings.
  • Share His Love:As Jesus’ followers, we are called to demonstrate His love to others. Look for opportunities to extend love, compassion, and kindness to those around you, just as Jesus did.
  • Trust in His Love:When facing challenges or difficult circumstances, remember that Jesus’ love for you is unwavering. Trust in His love, knowing that He is with you and will provide comfort, guidance, and strength.

Remember, the story of Lazarus is a powerful reminder of Jesus’ love and His ability to bring life out of death. May this verse encourage you to experience and share the transformative love of Christ in your life.
