John 12:28

Posted on 18 May at 14:36
Listen to this article

“Father, glorify thy name. Then came there a voice from heaven, saying, I have both glorified it, and will glorify it again.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is speaking to a crowd of people and is preparing them for His upcoming crucifixion. He acknowledges that the hour has come for Him to be glorified through His sacrifice on the cross. Prior to this verse, Jesus predicts His death and teaches about the need to follow Him and believe in His message.

Jesus’ Prayer:Jesus begins by addressing God as “Father” and prays for the glorification of His name. This prayer reflects Jesus’ submission to the will of the Father and His desire to fulfill His mission on Earth. Jesus always sought to bring glory to the Father, and His prayer in this verse demonstrates His commitment to that purpose.

The Voice from Heaven:In response to Jesus’ prayer, a voice from heaven is heard, affirming that God has already glorified His name and will continue to do so. This voice represents the Father’s approval and affirmation of Jesus’ mission and ministry. It serves as a confirmation of Jesus’ role as the Son of God and the Messiah.

The Fulfillment of Prophecy:The voice from heaven echoes previous instances in Jesus’ life where the Father spoke audibly, such as during Jesus’ baptism and the transfiguration. This voice from heaven not only encourages Jesus but also affirms the fulfillment of Old Testament prophecies that spoke of the Messiah’s glorification.

Lessons for believers:This verse highlights several important lessons for believers:

  • a. Jesus’ submission to the Father: Jesus’ prayer exemplifies His complete submission to the Father’s will. As believers, we are called to imitate Jesus’ obedience and surrender our lives to God’s purpose.
  • b. The importance of glorifying God: Jesus’ primary aim was to glorify the Father, and we are also called to live in a way that brings glory to God. Through our actions, attitudes, and words, we should seek to reflect the character and nature of God.
  • c. God’s affirmation: The voice from heaven demonstrates that God acknowledges and affirms those who follow His will. When we align our lives with God’s purpose, we can trust that He will also affirm and support us in our journey of faith.
  • d. The fulfillment of God’s promises: The voice from heaven serves as a reminder that God is faithful to His promises. Just as Jesus’ mission was fulfilled, we can have confidence that God will fulfill His promises in our lives as well.

Overall, John 12:28 presents a powerful moment in Jesus’ ministry, highlighting His submission to the Father, the affirmation from heaven, and the importance of glorifying God in our own lives.
