John 13:15

Context:To better understand this verse, let’s examine the context in which it was spoken. In John 13, Jesus begins by washing the disciples’ feet, an act of humility typically performed by a servant. This act shocked the disciples, as it was contrary to the cultural norms of that time. Jesus used this opportunity to teach them an important lesson about serving others.

Leading by Example:Jesus starts verse 15 by saying, “For I have given you an example.” By washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus demonstrated the attitude and behaviour He expected from His followers. He wanted them to understand that true leadership involves serving others selflessly, just as He had done for them.

The Call to Imitate:The second part of the verse says, “that ye should do as I have done to you.” Jesus calls His disciples to imitate His actions, not only in the act of foot-washing but also in the attitude of humility and selflessness. He desires them to serve one another with love and compassion, mirroring His example.

Application:This verse has broader implications for believers today. It teaches us the importance of humility, servanthood, and loving one another sacrificially. We are called to follow the example of Jesus in our interactions with others, whether in our families, churches, communities, or workplaces.
