John 14:7
If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also: and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.
John 14:7 (KJV)
Context
John 14 is part of the Farewell Discourse, which Jesus spoke to His disciples just before His crucifixion. In this chapter, He comforts and instructs them, preparing them for His departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. The immediate setting includes Jesus’ response to Thomas and Philip, where He declares that He is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6), and that seeing Him is seeing the Father.
Meaning
Jesus begins with a condition: “If ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.” The phrase “had known” suggests a deeper, more perfect knowledge, not mere intellectual awareness. The disciples already knew Jesus as the Son of God and Messiah, but Jesus calls them to a fuller understanding. To know Jesus is to know God because Jesus is the perfect representation of the Father’s nature and character.
Jesus continues, “and from henceforth ye know him, and have seen him.” Through Jesus’ earthly ministry, He revealed the Father’s heart, will, and character through His words, actions, and miracles. By observing Jesus’ life, the disciples had the privilege of witnessing God’s nature and attributes. This revelation is direct and personal; the knowledge of the Father is not abstract but is found in the person of Jesus Christ.
Biblical connections
This verse affirms the unity of the Father and the Son, a foundational truth for Christian doctrine. It also connects to Jesus’ earlier declaration in John 14:6 that He is the way to the Father. The knowledge of God is inseparable from the knowledge of Jesus Christ.
Application
John 14:7 encourages believers to seek a deeper knowledge of Jesus, recognising that He is the ultimate revelation of the Father and the key to experiencing a personal relationship with God. It challenges us to move from a superficial acquaintance to an intimate, transformative knowledge of Jesus, which reveals the Father’s love and character. In knowing Jesus, we have access to the Father, and through faith in Him, we can experience the fullness of God’s love, forgiveness, and grace.
Reflection
This verse assures us that in knowing Jesus, we truly know the Father. It calls us to deepen our relationship with Christ, for in Him, the Father is made known. As we grow in our knowledge of Jesus, we grow in our knowledge of God, and we are comforted by the certainty that we have seen the Father in Him.
