John 15:10
If ye keep my commandments, ye shall abide in my love; even as I have kept my Father’s commandments, and abide in his love.
John 15:10 (KJV)
Context
John 15 is part of Jesus’ teaching to His disciples during the Last Supper. In this chapter, Jesus uses the metaphor of a vine and branches to illustrate the relationship between Himself (the vine) and His followers (the branches). He emphasizes the importance of abiding in Him and bearing fruit.
Meaning
Jesus begins verse 10 by stating, “If ye keep my commandments.” This highlights the significance of obedience to His teachings. The commandments Jesus refers to encompass His entire teaching, including the Sermon on the Mount and His instructions throughout the Gospels.
Jesus emphasizes that obedience to His commandments is linked to abiding in His love. When we faithfully follow His teachings and live in accordance with His will, we experience a deep and abiding love from Him. Our obedience is an expression of our love for Christ.
Jesus highlights His own obedience to His Father’s commandments as the perfect example. He states that just as He kept His Father’s commandments and abided in His love, His followers are to keep His commandments and abide in His love. Jesus’ perfect obedience to the Father serves as a model for us to follow.
Jesus makes it clear that love and obedience are intertwined. Our obedience to Christ’s commandments is an expression of our love for Him. Obedience flows from a heart transformed by His love and is not to be seen as a burdensome obligation but as a joyful response to His grace.
Biblical connections
This verse builds on the foundation of John 15:9, where Jesus says, “As the Father hath loved me, I have also loved you: abide ye in my love.” The parallel between the believer’s relationship to Christ and Christ’s relationship to the Father is clear: just as Jesus kept the Father’s commandments and abides in His love, so the believer who keeps Christ’s commandments will abide in His love. This is not presented as a way to earn or merit God’s love, but as the path of continued fellowship and conscious experience of that love. Obedience is the evidence of love and the means by which the disciple remains in the sphere of Christ’s love.
Application
Keeping the commandments is not the cause or reason for having an interest in Christ’s love, nor is it the cause of abiding in it. Rather, to those who observe Christ’s commandments, He continues to make further discoveries of His love, allowing them to see more clearly and largely what that love is. Obedience does not earn love but deepens the experiential enjoyment and assurance of it.
Reflection
By abiding in His love through obedience, we bear fruit that glorifies God and demonstrates our discipleship.
