John 16:15

Listen to this article

All things that the Father hath, are mine: therefore said I that he shall take of mine, and shal shew it vnto you. John 16:15 (KJV)

This verse belongs to Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples in the upper room just before His crucifixion. In this section He prepares the disciples for His departure and explains the role of the Holy Spirit who will come after Him. To grasp the meaning it helps to recall the immediate context: in the preceding verses Jesus speaks of the Spirit of truth who, when He comes, will guide the disciples into all truth, will not speak of Himself but will speak whatever He hears, and will reveal things to come (John 14:26).

“All things that the Father hath are mine.” Here Jesus emphasizes His unity with the Father. As the Son of God He shares in the divine nature and possesses everything the Father possesses. This statement underscores the unique relationship between the Father and the Son and affirms Jesus’ divinity.

“Therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.” Jesus explains that the Holy Spirit will receive what belongs to Him and disclose it to the disciples. The Spirit’s work is to guide, teach, and disclose the truth about Jesus. He does not speak independently but conveys what He receives from the Son. This highlights the interconnectedness of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit and demonstrates the cooperative work of the Trinity.

The passage also reveals the divine plan of revelation. The Holy Spirit continues to guide believers today, revealing the truth about Jesus, helping us understand God’s Word, and deepening our relationship with Him. In summary, John 16:15 stresses the unity between the Father and the Son, declares that all that the Father has is also the Son’s, and points to the Holy Spirit’s ongoing role in taking what belongs to the Son and making it known to believers, thereby guiding them into all truth.
