John 16:18

Posted on 18 May at 14:36
Listen to this article

“They said therefore, What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.”

Context: This verse is part of a larger passage known as the Farewell Discourse, where Jesus is speaking to His disciples shortly before His crucifixion. In this discourse, Jesus addresses various topics, including His impending departure, the coming of the Holy Spirit, and the disciples’ future mission.

In verse 16, Jesus tells His disciples that in a little while, they will no longer see Him, but then after a little while, they will see Him again. This statement confuses the disciples, leading to their question in verse 18: “What is this that he saith, A little while? we cannot tell what he saith.”

This question reveals the disciples’ lack of understanding and their struggle to comprehend Jesus’ words. It also reflects their emotional state as they grapple with the imminent separation from their beloved teacher and Lord.

Jesus’ statement about seeing Him after a little while refers to His crucifixion, burial, and subsequent resurrection. He knew that He would be taken away from them through His death on the cross, causing sorrow and confusion among His disciples. However, Jesus also promised that He would rise again and be with them once more.

The disciples’ inability to understand Jesus’ words underscores the limitations of their human perspective. They were unable to grasp the fullness of God’s plan and the significance of Jesus’ sacrifice at that moment. However, Jesus assured them that their grief would turn into joy when they see Him again (John 16:20-22).

This passage teaches us several important lessons. First, it highlights the reality that God’s ways and plans often transcend our human understanding. His timing and purposes may not align with our immediate expectations, leading to confusion or doubt. However, as believers, we are called to trust in God’s faithfulness and wisdom, even when we don’t fully comprehend His plans.

Second, Jesus’ resurrection serves as the ultimate source of hope and joy for His followers. Though the disciples faced sorrow and uncertainty during His crucifixion, His resurrection brought them immeasurable joy and strengthened their faith. Similarly, as Christians, we find hope in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, knowing that He conquered sin and death, and He is always with us.

Finally, this passage reminds us of the importance of seeking a deeper understanding of God’s Word. The disciples’ confusion arose from their limited understanding, but as they grew in knowledge and experience, they would come to comprehend the significance of Jesus’ words. Similarly, we are encouraged to study and meditate on Scripture, seeking the guidance of the Holy Spirit to deepen our understanding of God’s truth.

In summary, John 16:18 portrays the disciples’ confusion and inability to fully comprehend Jesus’ words. However, it also points us to the hope and joy found in the resurrection of Jesus Christ, reminding us to trust in God’s plans, seek a deeper understanding of His Word, and find comfort in His presence, even in times of confusion or uncertainty.
