John 16:21
“A woman when she is in travail hath sorrow, because her hour is come: but as soon as she is delivered of the child, she remembereth no more the anguish, for joy that a man is born into the world.”
Context:To understand the verse better, let’s look at the context. In the preceding verses, Jesus is preparing His disciples for His imminent departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. He speaks about the sorrow they will experience when He is taken away from them, but He assures them that their sorrow will turn into joy when they see Him again (John 16:20). This verse follows His statement about their sorrow turning into joy.
This verse is part of Jesus’ discourse with His disciples, commonly known as the Farewell Discourse, which takes place just before His crucifixion. In this particular verse, Jesus uses the analogy of a woman in labor to illustrate a spiritual truth.
The analogy of childbirth:Jesus compares the experience of a woman in labor to the disciples’ future experience. He says that a woman in labor experiences sorrow and anguish because her time has come. The pains of childbirth can be intense and overwhelming. However, once the child is born, the memory of the pain fades away, and joy fills her heart because new life has entered the world.
Spiritual application:Jesus draws a parallel between the woman’s experience of childbirth and the disciples’ experience. The disciples will experience sorrow and grief when Jesus is crucified and taken away from them. However, their sorrow will be transformed into joy when they see Him again after His resurrection. The arrival of Jesus’ resurrection and the coming of the Holy Spirit will bring them new life and a deep joy that surpasses their previous sorrows.
The significance:This verse highlights the temporary nature of sorrow and the lasting joy that comes from encountering Jesus. Just as the pains of childbirth are temporary and give way to the joy of new life, the disciples’ sorrow will be temporary, replaced by the joy of being in the presence of the resurrected Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.
Application to believers today:While this verse speaks directly to the disciples’ situation, we can also draw broader applications for believers today. It reminds us that we may face trials, sorrows, and challenges in life, but in Christ, we have the assurance of ultimate joy and victory. The difficulties we encounter are temporary, and through faith in Jesus, we can experience His transforming power and the joy of new life in Him.
