John 16:28

I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father.

This single, profound declaration serves as a complete summary of the incarnation, outlining the divine origin, earthly mission, impending departure, and heavenly exaltation of Jesus Christ. In these words, the entire trajectory of the Savior's redemptive work is clearly set forth.

First, the divine origin of the Son is established. He came forth from the Father, an assertion that emphasizes His eternal pre-existence and perfect unity with God. The Son did not begin to exist in Bethlehem; He was sent from the eternal communion of the Godhead. As the Sent One, He possesses the absolute authority of the Father, perfectly representing Him in an unbroken relationship of love and mutual knowledge.

Second, the purpose of His earthly mission is revealed as He entered into human history. The eternal Son stepped into the world not to pursue His own agenda, but to do the exact will of the Father who sent Him. Taking on human weakness, He offered Himself as the essential, atoning sacrifice for sin. This deliberate descent into a fallen world was the necessary bridge to reconcile humanity to a holy God.

Third, the impending departure is announced. His physical presence on earth was a temporary mission designed to accomplish salvation. His statement about leaving the world pointed directly toward His approaching suffering, crucifixion, and resurrection. Although this departure caused deep sorrow and confusion among His disciples, it was the necessary climax of His redemptive work.

Finally, the triumphant return and exaltation are proclaimed. Having fully accomplished the mission of salvation, the Son returns to the immediate presence and glory of the Father. This return is not a retreat, but a victory that secures the believer's standing. Because He goes to the Father, followers of Christ are granted the extraordinary privilege of praying directly to the Father in His name, assured of the Father's own direct love for them.
