Listen to this article

“But these things have I told you, that when the time shall come, ye may remember that I told you of them. And these things I said not unto you at the beginning, because I was with you.”

Context: To better understand the significance of John 16:4, it’s important to consider its context. In John 16, Jesus is speaking to His disciples during the Last Supper. He is preparing them for His impending crucifixion and departure from this world. In this chapter, Jesus discusses the coming of the Holy Spirit and the tribulations His disciples will face.

Jesus’ Foreknowledge: In this verse, Jesus tells His disciples that He has shared certain things with them so that when the time comes, they will remember His words. Jesus had foreknowledge of the events that would unfold, including His betrayal, crucifixion, and resurrection. By informing His disciples beforehand, He wanted to strengthen their faith and assure them that everything that would happen was part of God’s plan.

Gradual Revelation: Jesus explains that He didn’t reveal everything to His disciples at the beginning because He was physically present with them. As His earthly ministry progressed, He gradually revealed more profound truths to them. This gradual revelation allowed the disciples to grow in their understanding and faith.

Confirmation of Jesus’ Divinity: Jesus’ ability to foresee future events and His knowledge of what was to come reaffirms His divinity. He knew the trials and challenges His disciples would face, and He prepared them accordingly. This aspect of Jesus’ teaching emphasizes His omniscience and demonstrates His role as both Savior and Teacher.

Application for Believers: This verse reminds us that Jesus knows the future, and His words are reliable and trustworthy. As believers, we can find comfort and reassurance in the fact that Jesus has forewarned us about the trials and tribulations we may encounter. His teachings provide guidance and encouragement to face difficulties with faith and endurance.

The Role of the Holy Spirit: In the following verses of John 16, Jesus speaks about the coming of the Holy Spirit, who would guide and empower the disciples after Jesus’ departure. The Holy Spirit would remind them of Jesus’ teachings and help them remember all that Jesus had spoken. This verse sets the stage for the coming of the Holy Spirit, highlighting the Spirit’s role in bringing to remembrance the words of Christ.

Overall, John 16:4 reminds us of Jesus’ foreknowledge, His gradual revelation of truth, and His preparation of His disciples for the challenges they would face. It also points to the reliability of Jesus’ words and the coming of the Holy Spirit to aid believers in remembering and understanding His teachings.
