John 16:5
“But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?”
Context:John 16:5 is a part of Jesus’ farewell discourse, which He delivered to His disciples on the night before His crucifixion. In this discourse, Jesus prepared His disciples for His imminent departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit.
The Sending of Jesus:In the first part of the verse, Jesus says, “But now I go my way to him that sent me.” This statement refers to His impending departure from the world and His return to the Father in heaven. It emphasizes the mission and purpose for which Jesus was sent into the world by the Father (John 3:16-17).
– Reflect on the significance of Jesus being sent by the Father. What does it reveal about God’s love for humanity and His plan of salvation?
Lack of Inquiry:The second part of the verse states, “and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou?” Jesus highlights the disciples’ failure to ask Him where He is going. This shows their lack of understanding and their preoccupation with His physical presence among them.
– Consider the disciples’ perspective at that time. Why do you think they failed to ask Jesus about His destination?
– Reflect on the importance of seeking to understand God’s plans and purposes in our lives. How can we cultivate a heart that earnestly seeks His guidance?
Lessons for Discipleship:Jesus’ statement about His departure and the disciples’ lack of inquiry holds valuable lessons for discipleship and our relationship with Jesus today.
– Discuss the significance of Jesus’ departure and how it relates to the coming of the Holy Spirit (John 16:7). What does the Holy Spirit’s presence mean for believers today?
– Reflect on the disciples’ lack of inquiry and the importance of seeking a deeper understanding of Jesus and His teachings. How can we actively engage with Jesus and seek His guidance in our lives?
Application:Apply the lessons from this verse to your personal walk with Jesus and your relationship with Him.
- In what ways can you deepen your understanding of Jesus’ mission, His teachings, and the work of the Holy Spirit in your life?
- How can you cultivate a heart that seeks Jesus’ guidance and actively asks Him about His plans and purposes?
Remember to read the surrounding verses (John 16:1-15) to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the context and the complete discourse. Prayerfully meditate on the passage and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you personally through His Word.
