John 16:7
“Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.”
Context:John 16 is part of Jesus’ farewell discourse to His disciples. He is preparing them for His departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. In this verse, Jesus explains the purpose and benefit of His departure.
The Truth:Jesus begins by affirming that He is telling the truth. He wants to assure His disciples that what He is about to say is of utmost importance.
Jesus’ Departure:Jesus states that it is advantageous for the disciples that He goes away. This departure refers to His impending crucifixion, resurrection, and ascension. At first glance, it may seem puzzling that Jesus leaving would be beneficial to the disciples.
The Coming of the Comforter:Jesus explains that if He doesn’t go away, the Comforter, referring to the Holy Spirit, will not come to them. The Holy Spirit is often referred to as the Comforter or Helper because He provides spiritual guidance, comfort, and strength to believers.
The Role of the Holy Spirit:Jesus promises to send the Holy Spirit to the disciples after His departure. The Holy Spirit will fulfill a vital role in the lives of the disciples and all believers. He will guide them into all truth (John 16:13), convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment (John 16:8), and remind them of everything Jesus taught (John 14:26).
The Purpose and Benefit:Jesus emphasizes that it is expedient or advantageous for the disciples that He goes away so that the Holy Spirit can come to them. While Jesus was physically present, His ministry was limited to a specific location and time. However, through the Holy Spirit, Jesus’ presence would be available to all believers, empowering them to continue His work and fulfill their calling.
