John 16:8

Posted on 18 May at 14:36
Listen to this article

“And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment.”

This verse is part of a larger passage where Jesus is speaking to His disciples, preparing them for His impending departure and the coming of the Holy Spirit. Let’s explore the key themes and messages found in this verse:

The Promise of the Holy Spirit:In the preceding verses, Jesus tells His disciples about the coming of the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom He will send to them once He returns to the Father (John 16:7). In verse 8, Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as the one who “is come” or “will come” depending on the context. This indicates the future arrival of the Holy Spirit, which was fulfilled on the Day of Pentecost when the Holy Spirit descended upon the disciples (Acts 2:1-4). The Holy Spirit’s coming is a significant event in the life of believers, as Jesus promises that He will bring about certain works.

Reproving the World of Sin:The first work of the Holy Spirit mentioned in John 16:8 is to “reprove the world of sin.” The word “reprove” can also be understood as convict or convince. The Holy Spirit plays a vital role in convicting people of their sinfulness and their need for salvation. The Spirit brings conviction, showing individuals their separation from God due to sin and the need for repentance. Through this conviction, the Holy Spirit draws people to God and leads them to seek forgiveness and salvation in Jesus Christ.

Reproving the World of Righteousness:The second work of the Holy Spirit mentioned in this verse is to “reprove the world of righteousness.” The Spirit convicts the world concerning righteousness, pointing to the standard of righteousness found in Jesus Christ. Apart from Christ, humanity falls short of God’s perfect standard. The Holy Spirit reveals the righteousness of Christ and helps believers understand their need for His righteousness to be imputed to them through faith. Through the work of the Spirit, believers are enabled to live righteous lives in obedience to God’s commands.

Reproving the World of Judgment:The third work of the Holy Spirit mentioned in John 16:8 is to “reprove the world of judgment.” The Spirit convicts the world concerning judgment, highlighting the reality of God’s judgment upon sin. This conviction helps individuals recognize the consequences of rejecting God’s offer of salvation through Jesus Christ. It also emphasizes the importance of making a decision to accept Christ and avoid eternal separation from God. The Holy Spirit brings an understanding of the seriousness of sin and the need for repentance and faith in Christ.

In summary, John 16:8 speaks about the vital role of the Holy Spirit in convicting and convincing the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment. The Holy Spirit’s work is to bring conviction that leads to repentance, to reveal the righteousness found in Christ, and to make individuals aware of God’s judgment upon sin. This verse highlights the Holy Spirit’s transformative power in drawing people to Christ and leading them to a life of righteousness and salvation.
