John 17 is often called the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. It is a prayer He offered to God the Father just before His arrest and crucifixion. In this prayer, Jesus intercedes for His disciples, asking for their protection, unity, and future mission.
In John 17:15, Jesus expresses His concern for His disciples’ well-being. He acknowledges the presence of evil in the world and prays that God would protect His disciples from it. Yet He does not ask God to remove them from the world entirely. Instead, He prays for their preservation while they remain in the world.
Meaning
The world, in this context, refers to the fallen and sinful system that opposes God’s ways. Jesus understood the challenges His disciples would face as they would be witnesses for Him in a world that often rejects and opposes His message. He prays that God would keep them from the evil, a phrase many translations render as “protect them from the evil one,” pointing to a personal adversary. This prayer reveals Jesus’ deep concern for the well-being of His followers, asking for divine protection against the influence and harm that evil can bring.
Jesus does not ask the Father to remove His disciples from the world, whether by miraculous translation or by premature death to escape affliction. He recognizes that His disciples have a mission to fulfill: to be ambassadors of the Kingdom of God, sharing the good news and making disciples of all nations. Their continued presence in the world was necessary for God’s glory and the good of His people. Jesus’ prayer demonstrates that believers are not to isolate themselves from the world but to be in the world while living according to God’s values.

John 17:15 provides a valuable lesson for believers today. It reminds us that while we live in a world tainted by evil, we can find solace and strength in God’s protection.
