John 17:17
“Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.”
Context:John 17 is a chapter known as the “High Priestly Prayer” of Jesus. This prayer occurs during the Last Supper, just before Jesus’ arrest and crucifixion. In this prayer, Jesus is interceding on behalf of His disciples and future believers, praying for their unity and sanctification.
Sanctification:The word “sanctify” means to set apart or make holy. Jesus prays to the Father, asking Him to sanctify His disciples. Sanctification is a process by which believers are set apart and transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, becoming more like Christ in character and conduct.
Sanctification through truth:Jesus prays to the Father, asking Him to sanctify His disciples through truth. Here, “truth” refers to the Word of God, which is the embodiment of truth itself. The Bible contains God’s revealed truth, providing guidance, wisdom, and knowledge for believers. By engaging with and living according to God’s Word, believers are sanctified and transformed.
God’s Word is truth:Jesus emphasizes that God’s Word is truth. The Scriptures are not merely human wisdom or opinion, but they are divinely inspired and infallible. God’s Word reveals His nature, His will, and His plan for humanity. It is a reliable and authoritative source of truth that serves as the foundation for the believer’s faith and life.
Implications:Jesus’ prayer highlights the importance of the Word of God in the sanctification of believers. To experience growth and transformation in our spiritual lives, we need to engage with the truth of God’s Word regularly. By studying and meditating on Scripture, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts, renewing our minds, convicting us of sin, guiding us in righteousness, and shaping us to be more like Jesus.
Application:As believers, we should prioritise spending time in God’s Word, seeking to understand and apply its teachings in our lives. We can study the Bible individually, join Bible study groups, and participate in teachings and sermons based on Scripture. By aligning our lives with the truth of God’s Word, we are transformed and equipped to live in a manner that honours Him and reflects His character.
- In summary:John 17:17 emphasises the role of truth and the Word of God in the sanctification of believers. It underscores the importance of engaging with and applying God’s Word in our lives to experience growth, transformation, and a closer walk with Him.
