Context

John 17 is known as the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. Spoken during the Last Supper, just before His arrest and crucifixion, this prayer records Jesus interceding for His disciples and for all future believers, asking the Father to keep them united and holy.

Meaning

The word “sanctify” means to set apart or make holy. Jesus asks the Father to sanctify His disciples, setting them apart for God’s sacred purposes. This is not merely an external status but a process by which believers are transformed by the power of the Holy Spirit, becoming more like Christ in character and conduct.

Jesus prays that this sanctification would come “through thy truth.” Here, “truth” refers to the message Jesus brought—the gospel, the good news of salvation through faith in Christ. God’s Word is the embodiment of truth itself, containing His revealed will and wisdom. By engaging with and living according to God’s Word, believers are sanctified and transformed.

Jesus then affirms, “thy word is truth.” The Scriptures are not merely human wisdom or opinion; they are divinely inspired and infallible. God’s Word reveals His nature, His will, and His plan for humanity. It is a reliable and authoritative source of truth that serves as the foundation for the believer’s faith and life.

This prayer also has a ministerial dimension. Jesus prays for the apostles as ministers of the word, that they would be freshly commissioned and empowered for their work after His resurrection and ascension. This highlights the ongoing need for divine enabling in ministry.

Application

As believers, we should prioritise spending time in God’s Word, seeking to understand and apply its teachings in our lives. We can study the Bible individually, join Bible study groups, and participate in teachings and sermons based on Scripture. By aligning our lives with the truth of God’s Word, we are transformed and equipped to live in a manner that honours Him and reflects His character.

John 17:17 emphasises the vital connection between truth and holiness: believers are made holy through the truth of God’s word. To experience growth and transformation in our spiritual lives, we need to engage with the truth of God’s Word regularly. By studying and meditating on Scripture, we allow the Holy Spirit to work in our hearts, renewing our minds, convicting us of sin, guiding us in righteousness, and shaping us to be more like Jesus.
