John 17:19
“And for their sakes I sanctify myself, that they also might be sanctified through the truth.”
Context:John 17 is commonly known as the High Priestly Prayer of Jesus. It is a powerful and profound prayer that Jesus offered to God the Father just before His crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and all future believers. John 17:19 is part of Jesus’ prayer for His disciples.
The Purpose of Sanctification:In this verse, Jesus says, “And for their sakes I sanctify myself.” To sanctify means to set apart or consecrate for a holy purpose. Jesus was about to offer Himself as a sacrifice on the cross for the redemption of mankind. He sanctified Himself by dedicating Himself completely to God’s will and fulfilling His mission of salvation. His purpose was to make Himself holy through obedience to the Father’s plan.
Sanctification through Truth:Jesus continues in the verse, “that they also might be sanctified through the truth.” Here, Jesus expresses His desire that His disciples and all believers would experience sanctification through the truth. The truth refers to the Word of God, which is the ultimate source of truth. Jesus Himself is the embodiment of truth (John 14:6), and He has revealed the truth of God’s plan for salvation.
Process of Sanctification:Sanctification is a process by which believers are set apart and transformed into the likeness of Christ. It involves being cleansed from sin, growing in holiness, and living in obedience to God. Jesus’ sanctification was unique, as He was sinless, but He set an example for His disciples to follow.
Sanctification as a Continuous Journey:The sanctification process is not a one-time event but a lifelong journey. Believers are called to pursue holiness, allowing the Holy Spirit to work in them, and being transformed day by day. Sanctification involves surrendering our will to God, growing in knowledge of His truth, and living in accordance with His commands.
The Role of Truth:The truth of God’s Word plays a vital role in the sanctification process. As we study and meditate on Scripture, the Holy Spirit illuminates our minds and hearts, convicting us of sin and guiding us into all truth (John 16:13). The truth of God’s Word exposes our shortcomings and helps us align our lives with His will.
Impact on Others:Jesus sanctified Himself for the sake of His disciples and all future believers. His sanctification provided the means for others to be sanctified as well. As we follow Jesus and allow His truth to transform us, our lives can have a positive impact on those around us. Our transformed lives can be a testimony to the power of God’s truth and draw others to Christ.
