John 17:6

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word.

John 17:6 (KJV)

John 17 records Jesus’ prayer to the Father shortly before His arrest and crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus prays for Himself (John 17:1-5), for His disciples (John 17:6-19), and for all future believers (John 17:20-26). Verse 6 focuses on Jesus’ acknowledgment of the disciples’ faithfulness and His gratitude for their response to His revelation.

Jesus begins, “I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world.” To “manifest” means to reveal or make known. Throughout His ministry, Jesus revealed God’s nature, character, and will to His disciples. He showed them the Father’s love, mercy, righteousness, and truth through His words, actions, and miracles. The “name” of God here signifies His attributes and character, especially His identity as Father revealed through the Son. Jesus was the perfect representation of God on earth (John 1:14).

Jesus acknowledges that the disciples were given to Him by the Father: “thine they were, and thou gavest them me.” This emphasizes divine initiative in salvation. The disciples were not randomly chosen but were entrusted to Jesus by God’s sovereign will. They belonged to the Father, and the Father gave them to the Son, highlighting the special relationship between the Father, the Son, and the disciples. Their origin was “out of the world,” yet they were set apart by the Father’s gift.

The final clause, “and they have kept thy word,” indicates that the disciples received and obeyed the words Jesus gave them from the Father. Jesus commends them for their faithfulness. They had listened to His teachings, obeyed His commandments, and internalized the truth He shared. Their response demonstrated genuine faith and commitment. This keeping of the word is evidence of their belonging to the Father and being given to the Son, a mark of true discipleship.

This verse connects to the broader context of John 17. In verse 8, Jesus says He gave them the words the Father gave Him, and they received them. In verse 14, He says He has given them the Father’s word. The disciples’ obedience is a direct result of the revelation they received. Jesus’ prayer is a model of intercession, where He reports to the Father on the completion of His work of revelation and the faithfulness of those given to Him. The theme of security continues in verse 12, where Jesus says He kept them in the Father’s name and none is lost except the son of perdition.

John 17:6 invites us to reflect on our own lives. Are we actively seeking to know God’s name and character? Are we responding faithfully to His Word and living in obedience to His teachings? Just as Jesus prayed for His disciples, we can seek God’s guidance and strength to fulfill our purpose in His kingdom and bring glory to His name.

This verse reveals Jesus’ gratitude for His disciples and their faithfulness to God’s Word. It underscores the importance of knowing and obeying God’s truth, as well as the significant role of discipleship and the special relationship between Jesus and His chosen followers. As we consider the disciples’ example, we are reminded that true discipleship is marked by receiving and keeping the word that Jesus gives.
