John 17:3

John 17:3 (KJV):

This verse is part of Jesus’ prayer to God the Father, commonly known as the High Priestly Prayer. In this particular verse, Jesus emphasizes the importance of knowing God and Jesus Christ for attaining eternal life.

Life Eternal:Jesus begins by referring to “life eternal,” which points to the everlasting life that believers receive through faith in Him. Eternal life is not merely an extension of earthly existence but a quality of life that is in fellowship with God Himself. It is a life that transcends physical death and continues in the presence of God for all eternity.

Knowing the Only True God:Jesus states that the essence of eternal life is to know the only true God. The word “know” here denotes more than mere intellectual knowledge; it signifies an intimate, personal relationship with God. It involves understanding, experiencing, and having a deep, personal knowledge of God’s character, attributes, and will.

Jesus Christ, Whom Thou Hast Sent:In addition to knowing the Father, Jesus also emphasizes the significance of knowing Himself as the Son of God whom the Father has sent. Jesus is the central figure of the Christian faith, the Messiah promised throughout the Old Testament scriptures. Through His incarnation, life, death, and resurrection, Jesus revealed the Father to humanity and became the means by which people can have a relationship with God and receive eternal life.

This verse underscores the inseparable relationship between knowing God the Father and Jesus Christ. True knowledge of God and eternal life are found through a personal relationship with Jesus Christ, who is the way, the truth, and the life (John 14:6).

The emphasis on “the only true God” implies that there are false gods or idols that people may be tempted to worship. Jesus affirms that the Father is the one true God, distinct from any other deities that may be worshiped by people.
