John 17:4

Posted on 18 May at 14:36

“I have glorified thee on the earth: I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.”

Context:The verse is part of Jesus’ high priestly prayer in John 17. In this chapter, Jesus prays for Himself, His disciples, and all believers. He prays to the Father, expressing His desire for God to be glorified and for the unity and protection of His followers.

Glorifying God:Jesus begins by saying, “I have glorified thee on the earth.” Throughout His earthly ministry, Jesus consistently demonstrated the character, power, and love of God the Father. Through His teachings, miracles, and ultimately His sacrificial death on the cross, Jesus revealed the glory of God to the world.

The Work Given by God:Jesus then states, “I have finished the work which thou gavest me to do.” Jesus recognised that He had completed the mission and purpose for which God the Father sent Him into the world. This work involved not only proclaiming the message of salvation and demonstrating God’s love but also offering Himself as the perfect sacrifice for the sins of humanity.

Obedience and Faithfulness:Jesus’ words highlight His obedience and faithfulness to the Father. He fulfilled the divine plan without any hesitation or deviation. His life serves as the ultimate example of perfect obedience to God’s will.

Application:As followers of Jesus, we can draw several lessons from this verse:

  • The purpose of our lives is to bring glory to God. We should strive to live in a way that reflects God’s character and brings honour to His name.
  • We have been given specific tasks and assignments by God. Just as Jesus had a work to complete, God has a unique plan for each of us. We should seek to understand and fulfil our God-given purpose, using our talents, abilities, and opportunities to make a positive impact for His kingdom.
  • Obedience and faithfulness are essential. Jesus’ commitment to complete the work given by God serves as a model for us. We should be faithful in carrying out the tasks assigned to us, even when faced with challenges or opposition.
  • It is possible to finish the work God has given us. Jesus declared that He had finished the work, indicating that it is possible to complete the tasks God has set before us. Through His strength and guidance, we can accomplish what He has called us to do.

Remember, this verse is part of Jesus’ prayer, expressing His deep connection with the Father and His desire for His followers to experience unity and divine protection. It serves as a powerful reminder of our purpose, obedience, and the potential to bring glory to God through our lives.
