John 20:3
Peter therefore went forth, and that other disciple, and came to the sepulchre.
John 20:3 (KJV)
Context
Mary Magdalene had come to the tomb early in the morning and found the stone rolled away from the entrance. Distressed, she ran to tell Simon Peter and the disciple whom Jesus loved, saying that someone had taken the Lord’s body. Hearing this report, both disciples set out for the tomb.
Meaning
The verse begins by highlighting Peter’s immediate response to Mary Magdalene’s news. Peter, known for his impulsive and zealous nature, acted quickly. His concern for Jesus and his desire to verify what Mary had reported led him to leave without delay and go to the sepulchre.
The verse also mentions “the other disciple” who accompanied Peter. This phrase refers to the author of the Gospel of John, traditionally identified as the apostle John. John often referred to himself as “the disciple whom Jesus loved” in his Gospel. This was not boastful; rather, it emphasized the unique bond he shared with Jesus.
Peter and John arrived at the sepulchre, the tomb where Jesus’ body had been placed after His crucifixion. Their purpose was to investigate and confirm the truth of Mary’s report. The following verses reveal what they observed when they looked inside.
Application
The significance of this verse lies in the disciples’ immediate response to the news of Jesus’ missing body. Peter and John took the initiative to investigate the situation personally, demonstrating their love for and commitment to Jesus. Their actions reveal a sense of urgency and eagerness to discover the truth of the resurrection.
John 20:3 underscores the disciples’ prompt action and their desire to seek the truth regarding Jesus’ resurrection. It serves as a reminder to believers to actively pursue the truth of the Gospel and to respond eagerly to the call of Jesus, just as Peter and John did in this instance.
