John 20:30

And many other signs truly did Jesus in the presence of his disciples, which are not written in this book:

John 20:30 (KJV)

This verse appears near the end of John’s Gospel, in the chapter recounting Jesus’ resurrection appearances to His disciples. It follows Thomas’s doubt and his confession of faith upon seeing the risen Lord.

John 20:30 states that Jesus performed many other signs in the presence of His disciples that are not written in this book. Throughout his Gospel, John calls Jesus’ miracles “signs” because they point to His divine identity and purpose. Here, the signs refer specifically to those done after the resurrection, witnessed only by His disciples, not by the general public.

The verse emphasizes that the Gospel records only a selection of Jesus’ works. This selection is intentional, as the next verse, John 20:31, explains that these were written so that readers might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing they might have life through His name. The recorded signs are sufficient to inspire faith in Jesus as the Christ and to lead readers to eternal life through Him.

The phrase “many other signs” underscores the abundant nature of Jesus’ ministry and the countless supernatural acts He performed. It also highlights the Gospel’s purpose: to present Jesus as the Son of God and to bring readers to saving faith. The verse reassures believers that what is written is enough for faith, while acknowledging that the full scope of Jesus’ works is far greater than any book could contain.

This verse encourages readers to trust the sufficiency of Scripture for faith and salvation. It also invites reflection on the many unrecorded acts of Jesus, reminding believers that His power and grace extend beyond what is written. The Gospel’s purpose—to lead people to believe in Jesus and have life through His name—remains central for every reader.
