John 21:22
“Jesus saith unto him, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.”
Context:In the preceding verses, Jesus reinstates Peter after Peter’s threefold denial during Jesus’ trial. Jesus asks Peter three times if he loves Him and then commissions him to “feed my sheep” (John 21:15-17). Afterward, Peter sees the disciple whom Jesus loved and asks Jesus about his future.
Here are a few key points to consider in this Bible study:
Individual Calling:Jesus responds to Peter’s question by saying, “If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? follow thou me.” Jesus emphasises the importance of Peter’s personal calling and discipleship. He tells Peter not to be concerned about the specific destiny of the other disciple but to focus on his own commitment to follow Jesus.
Avoiding Comparison:Jesus’ statement reminds us not to compare ourselves to others in matters of God’s plan and purpose for our lives. Each person has a unique calling and journey with God. Instead of being preoccupied with others, we should focus on our relationship with Christ, faithfully following Him and fulfilling the tasks He has given us.
Trusting God’s Sovereignty:Jesus’ words also indicate His sovereignty and authority over each disciple’s life. He affirms that His plan for each individual may vary, and it is not for us to question or compare. Our trust should be in God’s perfect wisdom and guidance for our lives, knowing that He works all things together for the good of those who love Him (Romans 8:28).
Following Jesus:Ultimately, the central message of this verse is the call to follow Jesus. Regardless of the paths and destinies of others, our primary focus should be on imitating Christ, obeying His teachings, and walking in His footsteps. Our devotion to Him should surpass any curiosity about what may happen to others.
