John 21:24
This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true.
John 21:24 (KJV)
Context
This verse concludes the Gospel of John. It identifies the author as the disciple who testifies to the events recorded and who wrote them down, and it affirms the truthfulness of his testimony. The disciple is traditionally understood to be John the Apostle, one of the twelve and a close companion of Jesus.
Throughout the Gospel, John refers to himself indirectly, often as “the disciple whom Jesus loved” (John 13:23; 19:26; 20:2; 21:7, 20). This concluding statement makes explicit what was implied earlier: the author was an eyewitness to the ministry, death, and resurrection of Jesus.
Meaning
The phrase “we know that his testimony is true” expresses the affirmation of a community of believers who vouch for the reliability of John’s witness. The Greek text uses a present participle for “testifieth,” indicating ongoing testimony, and an aorist participle for “wrote,” indicating a completed writing. Together, they show that John’s record is both finished and continually bearing witness to the truth about Jesus.
The verse serves as a seal of authenticity for the entire Gospel. It assures readers that what has been written is not legend or hearsay but the firsthand account of a disciple who was present. This emphasis on truthfulness highlights the Gospel’s trustworthiness as a guide to faith.
Biblical connections
The verse is closely tied to John 20:31, where John states his purpose: “But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name.” The testimony affirmed in John 21:24 is the means by which that purpose is accomplished.
It also connects to John 21:25, which notes that Jesus did many other things not recorded. This verse emphasizes the selective and purposeful nature of John’s testimony.
Application
Believers can trust the Gospel of John as a reliable foundation for faith. It presents Jesus as the Son of God, whose sacrificial death and resurrection offer eternal life. The verse calls readers to believe in Jesus and to live in the light of that truth, confident that the testimony on which their faith rests is true.
As you read the Gospel, remember that it is the eyewitness account of a disciple who was close to Jesus, written so that you might believe and have life through His name.
Reflection
The closing words of John’s Gospel invite personal response. If the testimony is true, then Jesus is who He claimed to be, and faith in Him carries eternal significance. Let this assurance deepen your trust in Scripture and your commitment to follow Christ.
