John 13:23

Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of his disciples, whom Jesus loved.

John 13:23 (KJV)

John 13:23 takes place during the Last Supper, the final meal Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion. In this chapter, Jesus washes the disciples’ feet and teaches them about humility and love. The setting is intimate, and the verse describes one disciple leaning on Jesus’ bosom, identified as the one “whom Jesus loved.“

In the ancient Near Eastern custom, guests did not sit upright at a table but reclined on couches, lying on their left side and eating with their right hand. The phrase “leaning on Jesus’ bosom” does not mean pressing against His body, but refers to the disciple reclining on the couch next to Jesus, in the place of honor closest to Him. This position indicates closeness and trust, and it allowed the disciple to ask Jesus a private question in the following verse, showing the access that closeness to Jesus provides.

The disciple is referred to as the one “whom Jesus loved.” Throughout the Gospel of John, the author, traditionally identified as John, the son of Zebedee, refers to himself in this humble way rather than by name. Scholars generally believe that John was the author of the Gospel and the disciple described here. The phrase highlights the personal nature of Jesus’ love for His followers, a love not based on merit but extended to all who believe in Him.

The intimate position of the disciple at the Last Supper reflects the deep spiritual bond between Jesus and His disciples. This closeness is a model for believers, demonstrating that those whom Jesus loves are brought near to Him. The disciple’s access to Jesus also illustrates the invitation to draw near to Christ in prayer and fellowship.

  • Intimacy with Jesus: The disciple’s position close to Jesus teaches us about the importance of cultivating an intimate relationship with Him. It emphasizes the invitation to draw near to Jesus and experience His love and presence in a profound way.

  • Jesus’ love for His disciples: The phrase “whom Jesus loved” reminds us of the deep love Jesus has for His followers. It highlights the personal nature of Jesus’ relationship with each one of His disciples, including us today. Jesus’ love is not based on our merits but is extended to all who believe in Him.

  • Discipleship and friendship: John’s close relationship with Jesus models the kind of discipleship and friendship we are called to have with Christ. As we draw near to Jesus, spending time with Him, listening to His teachings, and seeking to understand His heart, we can grow in our discipleship and friendship with Him.

John 13:23 invites us to reflect on the deep love and intimacy we can have with Jesus as His disciples. By studying this verse, we are reminded of the personal nature of our relationship with Christ and the invitation to draw near to Him. May we seek to grow in our love for Him and walk closely with Him every day.
