John 13:25

Hee then lying on Iesus breast, saith vnto him, Lord, who is it? John 13:25 (KJV)

This verse belongs to the Last Supper narrative, the final meal Jesus shared with His disciples before His crucifixion. In the same scene Jesus humbly washed the disciples’ feet to illustrate humility and service. The speaker in John 13:25 is the “disciple whom Jesus loved,” who is leaning on Jesus’ breast, or reclining close to Him at the table. He whispers, “Lord, who is it?” as Jesus is about to reveal that one of the disciples will betray Him.

The posture of leaning on Jesus’ breast signifies an intimate relationship with the Lord. It conveys trust, friendship, and affection, inviting believers to draw near to Christ, cultivate closeness, and find comfort in His presence. The disciple’s question demonstrates a sincere desire for truth. He turns to the source of wisdom, seeking insight into the identity of the betrayer. Likewise, Christians are called to pursue truth through prayer, Scripture study, and reliance on the Holy Spirit.

The question also reflects an awareness that betrayal was present among the disciples. This acknowledgment highlights human sinfulness and the reality that even close companions can fall into treachery. It serves as a warning for believers to guard their hearts, remain vigilant against temptation, and discern the motives and actions of those around them.

Finally, the passage underscores Jesus’ foreknowledge. Even before the disciples understood the full picture, Jesus had already identified Judas Iscariot as the betrayer (John 13:21‑26). This reveals His divine nature and sovereign control over the events of His earthly ministry, assuring us that Christ sees beyond our limited perspective and works all things according to His purpose.
