John 3:4

Nicodemus saith unto him, How can a man be born when he is old? can he enter the second time into his mother’s womb, and be born?

John 3:4 (KJV)

John 3:4 is part of a nighttime conversation between Jesus and Nicodemus, a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews. Nicodemus came to Jesus to inquire about His teachings and to understand the kingdom of God. This conversation is recorded in the Gospel of John, Chapter 3.

Nicodemus expresses his confusion regarding Jesus’ statement about the necessity of being “born again” to see the kingdom of God. He questions the possibility of a grown person returning to their mother’s womb and being born again physically. Nicodemus is interpreting Jesus’ words literally, which leads to his perplexity.

Nicodemus’ question reveals the apparent absurdity and impossibility of what Jesus seemed to be saying, especially for someone already old. His response shows that he understood Jesus’ words as a reference to a natural, physical birth that would need to be repeated. This misunderstanding sets the stage for Jesus’ clarification that He is speaking of a spiritual birth, not a physical one.

Jesus’ statement about being “born again” is not a reference to physical birth but to a spiritual rebirth or regeneration. It signifies a transformation of the inner self, a new life in God’s kingdom. This new birth is brought about by the work of the Holy Spirit in a person’s heart when they place their faith in Jesus Christ.

Nicodemus, being a learned Pharisee, had a deep knowledge of the Law but was struggling to grasp the spiritual concepts Jesus was conveying. He approached Jesus with a literal and earthly perspective, missing the spiritual depth of His teachings. This highlights the need for spiritual discernment and openness to receive God’s revelation.

Jesus emphasizes the importance of the spiritual rebirth, which is essential for entering the kingdom of God. Through faith in Jesus Christ, one experiences a radical transformation, receiving forgiveness of sins and eternal life. This new birth enables believers to have a personal relationship with God and to live according to His will.

  • Spiritual Rebirth: John 3:4 reminds us that salvation is not achieved through our own efforts or works, but through faith in Jesus Christ. It is a spiritual transformation that occurs when we surrender our lives to Him, acknowledging our need for His forgiveness and grace.

  • Seek Spiritual Understanding: Like Nicodemus, we should approach God’s Word with a humble and teachable heart. It is essential to seek the guidance of the Holy Spirit to understand the deeper spiritual truths contained in Scripture. Through prayer, study, and seeking wise counsel, we can grow in our understanding of God’s kingdom and His plans for our lives.

  • Embrace New Life in Christ: John 3:4 encourages us to embrace the new life offered by Jesus. We are called to leave behind our old ways of living in sin and selfishness and to pursue a transformed life empowered by the Holy Spirit. As we grow in our relationship with Christ, we are called to walk in obedience to His teachings, displaying His love and grace to the world.

Nicodemus’ question shows that even a learned religious leader could misunderstand spiritual truths. His confusion reminds us that the things of God are received through divine revelation and the work of the Holy Spirit, not through human reasoning alone. When we encounter truths in Scripture that seem difficult or impossible, we can respond like Nicodemus did—by bringing our questions honestly to Jesus. The new birth comes from above, and it is essential for seeing the kingdom of God.
