John 4:19

Listen to this article

“The woman saith unto him, Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet.”

Context:This verse is part of a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar. Jesus had initiated a conversation with her, and in their dialogue, He revealed Himself to be the Messiah (John 4:26). The woman recognised Jesus as a prophet and expressed her understanding to Him.

The Woman’s Perception:The woman’s acknowledgement that Jesus is a prophet shows her growing recognition of His divine insight. Earlier in the conversation, Jesus revealed the details of her personal life, including her marital history (John 4:16-18), which astonished her. This revelation demonstrated that Jesus possessed supernatural knowledge. The woman’s acknowledgement reflects her growing belief in Jesus and His authority.

The Role of a Prophet:The title “prophet” held significant meaning in Jewish culture. Prophets were individuals chosen and anointed by God to convey His messages and will to the people. They were messengers of God, speaking on His behalf. The role of a prophet included teaching, correction, and guidance for the people.

Spiritual Insights:The woman’s statement, “Sir, I perceive that thou art a prophet,” reveals her openness to spiritual insights and her willingness to recognise the divine presence in Jesus. Through their conversation, Jesus engaged the woman in a deep discussion about spiritual matters, pointing her toward the truth of God’s salvation and the nature of true worship.

  • Application:Like the woman at the well, we can learn from her response to Jesus. When Jesus speaks to us through His Word or through the prompting of the Holy Spirit, it is essential to discern His presence and listen attentively. Just as the woman acknowledged Jesus as a prophet, we should recognise Him as the Son of God and Saviour, who reveals Himself to us through His Word and the work of the Holy Spirit.
