John 4:20

“Our fathers worshipped in this mountain; and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”

John 4:20 (KJV) says: “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain, and ye say, that in Jerusalem is the place where men ought to worship.”

This verse is part of a conversation between Jesus and a Samaritan woman at the well of Sychar. The woman was surprised that Jesus, being a Jew, would speak to her, a Samaritan, as there was a historical and religious animosity between Jews and Samaritans. Jesus had asked her for a drink of water, and their conversation gradually turned to matters of worship and the true nature of God.

In this particular verse, the woman brings up a religious dispute between Jews and Samaritans regarding the proper place of worship. The Samaritans had their own temple on Mount Gerizim, while the Jews considered Jerusalem, specifically the temple there, as the center of worship. The woman, referring to the Samaritans, says, “Our fathers worshipped in this mountain.”

Her statement reflects the historical context and the divergence in religious practices between the Jews and the Samaritans. The Samaritans claimed that their religious traditions traced back to Moses and the Israelites, while the Jews emphasized the centrality of Jerusalem as the chosen location for worship according to God’s instructions.

By mentioning this dispute, the woman implies that worship practices and locations are significant, seeking Jesus’ perspective on the matter. She might have been referring to the question of whether it was necessary to worship in Jerusalem or on Mount Gerizim to truly worship God.

This verse sets the stage for Jesus’ response, where He teaches about the nature of true worship and the coming changes in the worship of God. Jesus emphasizes that the place of worship is not the central focus but rather the attitude of the worshipper and the truth they worship in spirit and in truth (John 4:23-24).

Through His teachings, Jesus points out that the time was coming when true worship would transcend physical locations. In His person and work, He would fulfill the role of the temple, the meeting place between God and humanity. Jesus ultimately declares Himself as the Messiah, the Savior of the world (John 4:26).

This passage teaches us several important lessons. It highlights that God is not confined to a specific physical location or place of worship. Instead, true worship is characterized by a sincere heart, a genuine spirit, and a deep devotion to God. Jesus’ response also indicates that He is the fulfillment of true worship, and through Him, people can have a direct relationship with God.

In summary, John 4:20 captures a conversation between Jesus and the Samaritan woman about the dispute between the Jews and Samaritans regarding the proper place of worship. This verse sets the stage for Jesus’ teaching on the true nature of worship, emphasizing that genuine worship is not about physical locations but about a sincere heart and a genuine spirit.
