John 4:42

Posted on 18 May at 14:05

And said vnto the woman, Now we beleeue, not because of thy saying, for we haue heard him our selues, and know that this is indeed the Christ, the Sauiour of the world. John 4:42 (KJV)

This verse is part of the account of Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well. In this story Jesus engages the woman in a conversation, reveals that He is the Messiah, and offers her the gift of living water, which symbolizes eternal life through faith in Him.

John 4:42 records the response of the Samaritans in the woman’s city after they had heard Jesus speak. Their declaration marks a significant shift in belief.

Transformation of Belief – At first the Samaritans believed because of the woman’s testimony. In this verse they state that their faith has deepened; they have moved beyond relying solely on her words and now have their own personal encounter with Jesus. This signifies a transformation from second‑hand hearing to firsthand experience of His teachings and presence.

Personal Knowledge of Christ – The Samaritans affirm that they have heard Jesus themselves. They have listened to His teachings, heard His voice, and recognized Him as the Christ. Their faith is no longer based merely on another’s testimony but is grounded in their own experience of Him.

Recognition of Jesus as the Savior – They acknowledge that Jesus is not only the Christ but also the Saviour of the world. This declaration highlights the universal scope of His redemptive work, extending beyond a regional or national deliverer to one who offers salvation to all peoples.

Implications for Believers – The passage reminds believers today that personal encounters with Jesus can deepen and strengthen faith. While the testimony of others may lead us to initially believe, it is essential to seek a personal relationship with Christ through prayer, study of Scripture, and openness to His presence. Such personal knowledge forms the foundation of a vibrant and enduring faith.

In summary, John 4:42 captures the Samaritans’ movement from belief based on the woman’s testimony to a personal knowledge of Jesus as the Christ and the Saviour of the world. The verse encourages all believers to pursue personal encounters with Jesus, allowing that experience to deepen faith and recognize Him as the source of salvation for all humanity.
