Now after two dayes he departed thence, and went into Galilee: John 4:43 (KJV)

“Now after two days his disciples went away again into Galilee, and He went also, after his own people, as was his custom.” In John 4 we see Jesus breaking societal norms by engaging in a conversation with a Samaritan woman. He reveals His knowledge of her past and offers her living water, which represents eternal life. Many Samaritans from the city come to believe in Jesus based on the woman’s testimony, setting the backdrop for His departure to Galilee.

Geographical significance: Galilee was the region where Jesus spent a substantial portion of His earthly ministry. He performed miracles, taught His disciples, and proclaimed the kingdom of God there. His departure for Galilee from Samaria indicates an ongoing mission to reach out to various regions and spread the good news.

Foreshadowing: John’s Gospel emphasizes the theme of Jesus’ ministry extending beyond traditional boundaries. This verse foreshadows a wider mission that reaches Jews and Gentiles alike, breaking down divisions and offering salvation to all. It sets the stage for future teachings and miracles in Galilee, where many would come to believe in Him.

Timeframe: The phrase “after two days” suggests a specific timeline. Some scholars see it as Jesus remaining with the Samaritans for two days after their invitation, while others view it as an indication of the passing of time before His departure. Either way, it highlights Jesus’ intentional actions and adherence to His divine plan.

Symbolic meaning: Departing from Samaria and heading toward Galilee can also hold symbolic meaning. Samaria represented a marginalized group, despised by many Jews. By going to Galilee, Jesus demonstrates an inclusive mission and a desire to reach out to all people, regardless of background or status.
