Listen to this article

“Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.”

Context:In this verse, Jesus is speaking to a group of Jews who were questioning His authority and His claims to be the Son of God. Jesus responds by explaining His relationship with the Father and how He carries out His works.

“Verily, verily, I say unto you”: Jesus begins His statement with the phrase “verily, verily” or “truly, truly.” This emphasizes the importance and truthfulness of what He is about to say.

“The Son can do nothing of himself”: Jesus humbly declares that as the Son of God, He is dependent on the Father for His actions and authority. This statement underscores the unity and submission within the Godhead.

“But what he seeth the Father do”: Jesus explains that His actions are not independent or self-directed. Instead, He only does what He sees the Father doing. This points to the intimate relationship between the Father and the Son.

“For what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise”: Jesus states that whatever the Father does, the Son does likewise. This reveals the perfect harmony and unity of purpose between the Father and the Son. Jesus’ actions are a reflection of the Father’s actions.

This verse highlights the deep relationship between Jesus and the Father. Jesus, as the Son of God, fully submits to the will of the Father and carries out His works in complete obedience. It demonstrates the unity of the Father and the Son and emphasizes Jesus’ role as the perfect representation of the Father on earth.

This passage also teaches us about our relationship with God. Just as Jesus depended on the Father, we are called to depend on God in all things. We should seek to align our actions with His will, following His example and striving for unity with Him. As we grow in our relationship with God, we can learn to discern His leading and carry out His works in our lives.

Overall, John 5:19 highlights the profound unity and submission between the Father and the Son, emphasizing Jesus’ complete dependence on the Father in carrying out His works.
